Biography

Anthony Bernheim, FAIA, LEED Fellow, Director of Sustainability, AECOM Architecture, has pioneered integrated sustainable building practices for over 28 years, as a planner and architect addressing a wide range of building types. Anthony developed the AECOM ecoSystem, an integrative design dashboard toolkit to guide high-performance, energy-efficient, comfortable, and healthy buildings, utilizing resource-efficient materials that strive for “living” and “regenerative” performance.

Throughout his career he has focused on integrative design, building occupant health, and sustainable products. He developed product volatile organic compound (VOC) testing specifications for projects (e.g. San Francisco Main Library) in the 1990s. His work for the California Capitol Area East End Complex office building (1999-2003) relating indoor air chemical concentrations to building occupant health, and developing building specifications for testing building products for VOC emissions, has resulted in new third-party indoor air quality (IAQ) product certifications, IAQ code requirements, improved building products, and improved building indoor environmental quality. Anthony recently wrote a chapter on “Ambient Outdoor Air Quality – Community Health,” for the Wiley Publications’ Sustainable and Resilient Communities book.

Anthony is a member of the U.S. Green Building Council’s (USGBC) Board of Director's, is the current Treasurer and Executive Committee Member, is the co-chair of the Classroom to Boardroom Diversity Mentoring Program, and is active on the Buildings and Human Health Working Group. He was honored with the AIA California Council's 2004 Nathaniel A. Owings Award “in recognition of a lifetime of service, commitment, and advocacy for the principles of sustainable design and preserving the earth’s natural resources,” the 2009 USGBC Northern California Chapter David Gottfried Special Achievement Award for being “an individual whose career and contributions to the industry demonstrate exceptional passion, leadership, and commitment to green building, USGBC, and the Northern California Chapter.”
