Biography

Michelle Halle Stern is an Associate at Perkins+Will where she provides sustainability leadership for their Chicago office. Her responsibilities include facilitating workshops, developing green design strategy, and managing the sustainability process on multiple projects. Michelle has over 20 years of experience, devoting the last 15 to green design. She has worked on dozens of LEED New Construction, Core & Shell, and Commercial Interiors projects. Projects range in size and scope from small furniture showrooms to 1 million s.f. hospitals.

Prior to joining Perkins+Will, Ms. Halle Stern directed green building initiatives and LEED consulting for the Delta Institute, an environmental non-profit focusing on the Great Lakes region. She was also Director of Sustainability at OWP/P, where she initiated their sustainability program.

The author of numerous articles, Michelle speaks frequently on green building issues. She has been a member of USGBC LEED® Faculty™ since 2002, is a core committee member of the Indoor Environmental Quality Technical Advisory Group, and serves on several USGBC and GBCI ad hoc committees.

Ms. Halle Stern was the founding Chair of the U.S. Green Building Council - Chicago (now Illinois) Chapter and received the chapter’s first Chapter Leadership Award. The Chicago Chapter was one of the US Green Building Council’s first seven chapters and among the first to support an Executive Director.

Michelle holds Bachelor of Science degrees in Architecture and Civil Engineering, and a Masters of Science degree in Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences, all from the University of Illinois.

When not promoting green building at work, Michelle is busy encouraging her husband and 3 girls to recycle, use the half-flush, and turn off the faucet.
