India ranks third globally for countries outside of the U.S. with the most LEED-certified space, with over 15 million gross square meters, according to the Top 10 Countries for LEED 2016 report released by USGBC.

In 2014, USGBC announced its expanded support of LEED in India and last year, GBCI India opened up an office in Gurgaon to facilitate the expansion of LEED and other GBCI programs while offering on-the-ground support to our customers. We also currently have offices in Hyderabad, Bangalore and Mumbai.

We've been getting a few questions about LEED certifications in India. We want to make things as easy as possible, so here are the answers to some recent frequently asked questions (FAQs).

1. How is LEED certification in India administered?

To strengthen the global consistency of the LEED rating system, effective June 5, 2014, GBCI began managing the certification process for all LEED rating systems in India, including the LEED India rating system, which was previously managed by the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC).

2. I registered my project under LEED India through IGBC. Which organization manages my certification?

All projects registered from June 30, 2014, and onward, are certified by GBCI. Only LEED India projects registered with IGBC on or before June 30, 2014, will be certified by IGBC until June 2018.

3. Is there a sunset date for LEED India v2011 projects?

Yes—that sunset date is June 30, 2021, regardless of whether the project is registered with IGBC or GBCI. Any project registered with IGBC that has not completed their certification by June 1, 2018, will transition to GBCI to complete their certification. LEED India v2011 projects registered with IGBC that have not completed their certification by June 1, 2018, will transition to GBCI to complete their certification.  The rating system does not change, they continue under LEED India v2011 with GBCI.
