The 107th International District Energy Association (IDEA) Annual Meeting was recently held in St. Paul, Minnesota. It is amazing to consider the storied history of a group that has been continuously meeting since 1909 and is essential to advancing the state of efficient, economical and resilient power systems today. Initially, the primary focus of IDEA was advancing the district heating industry; district cooling is a more recent topic of interest.
Microgrids, which allow for on-site renewable energy generation, have answered the call to make our grids more resilient in the wake of superstorms around the world that wreak havoc on our electric systems.
At USGBC, one important goal of our vision is promoting sustainable mobility around the world. We believe that parking and sustainability are not mutually exclusive concepts. We say that every story about a green building is a story about people, and every story about parking is a story about the connection between people and the planet.
This past week, USGBC was an invited participant in the White House Summit on Scaling Renewable Energy and Storage with Smart Markets. The summit convened leading state, utility and private-sector stakeholders to highlight progress and commitments to promote a flexible, efficient, clean and reliable 21st century power grid. PEER is among the tools to drive this needed transformation.
