Q: Can I retake the exam if I fail?
A: Candidates are allotted three registrations per exam section per one year application period. This means that you have three chances to meet the minimum competency score of 170 for any given LEED Professional Exam section while your application is live.

For the LEED Green Associate credential, this translates into three attempts at the exam during the one year application period.

For a LEED AP credential, you are allowed three attempts per section during the one year application period. Both sections are delivered concurrently unless you previously passed one of the sections during the current application period. In this case, you will only be tested on the section you have not passed. Once you have passed a section of a LEED AP exam, that section will no longer be available to you during your application period. Candidates must pass both sections of a LEED AP exam to earn the credential.

Q: Can my exam score be reviewed?
A: Exam scoring is standardized through a computerized algorithmic process which is applied exactly the same way to each LEED AP exam that is taken. GBCI will investigate exam scores only in instances of technical malfunctions at the test site.

Q: I was very close to passing. Can my exam score be changed?

A: GBCI does not modify exam scores under any conditions.

Q: Can I see the questions that I missed?
A: GBCI does not release exam content or answers or allow candidates to review proprietary content under any circumstances.

Q: How much does it cost to retake the exam?

A: The exam fee does not change. Each time you take the exam, you will be charged the same exam fee. The exam fees per exam appointment are as follows:

LEED Green Associate
  • $150 for USGBC National Members and full-time students
  • $200 for all others

LEED AP exam (both parts)
  • $300 for USGBC National Member
  • $450 for non-member

LEED AP exam (specialty part only)
  • $150 for USGBC National Members
  • $250 for non-members

Q: Multiple specialties - how many can I have? Do I have to maintain each one?
A: You may earn as many specialties as you like. The LEED AP with specialtyexam application can be used to take any of the available LEED AP specialty exams. In your one year application period, you will be allowed to register for up to three (3) exam appointments for each of the additional specialty exams.

LEED APs who have earned more than one of the O+M, Homes, BD+C, ID+C, or ND specialty credentials must maintain each of them. LEED APs will designate their "primary specialty," the specialty in which they will complete the majority of their CE hours. All other specialties will be designated as "secondary specialties." LEED APs must complete 30 CE hours in their primary specialty (6 of which must be LEED-specific). LEED APs must also complete an additional 6 LEED-specific hours for each secondary specialty. See the CMP Guide for details.

Q: What are the CMP requirements for a LEED Green Associate?

A: Participate in 15 hours of continuing education required every 2 years, with 3 hours obtained from an approved program specific to the LEED Rating System, credit categories, and LEED updates.

Q: What are the CMP requirements for a LEED AP?
A: Participate in 30 hours of continuing education required every 2 years, with 6 hours obtained from an approved program specific to the LEED Rating System, credit categories, and LEED updates.

Q: How should I designate my credential?
A: For LEED Green Associates, the appropriate way to designate your credential is LEED Green Associate.

For LEED APs (those who passed or enrolled into the LEED AP Operations + Maintenance, LEED AP Homes, LEED AP Building Design + Construction, or LEED AP Interior Design + Construction credentials), the appropriate way to designate your credential is LEED AP followed by your specialty either written out or abbreviated (LEED AP Operations + Maintenance or LEED AP O+M).

While LEED is a registered trademark, USGBC and GBCI do not require LEED APs to use the '®' or 'TM' symbols in email signatures or on business cards. The LEED Professional Logo Guidelines provide the logo and guidelines for its use.

Q: Can I be both a LEED Green Associate and a LEED AP?
A:If you successfully complete any of the LEED AP specialty exams duringan active LEED Green Associate reporting period, the LEED GreenAssociate credential will expire and be replaced by the LEED APspecialty credential. Please see your exam’s candidate handbook or contact GBCI Credentialing Staff at www.gbci.org/contact for more information.

Q: When will I receive my certificate?

A: Once your exam results have been processed in your My Credentials account, you will receive an email notifying you that you can now request your certificate.

Certificates are available in two forms: softcopy (PDF) and a hardcopy. You can view and download the softcopy at any time for free. You can request one free hardcopy each reporting period. Each additional copy cost $25.

Q: How can I change my listing in the LEED Professional Directory?
A: To update your listing go to My Credentials > Update Profile > LEED Professional Directory. All changes you make to your organization, city, state, country, primary and secondary area of practice in your My Credentials profile will appear instantly in the LEED Professional Directory.

Q: Can I receive continuing education credit for my professional organization, license, or credential for passing a LEED professional exam?

A: GBCI is not an approved education provider for any professional organization, licensing or credentialing body. You may be able to receive credit for the time spent preparing for the exam; please check with your professional organization, licensing or credentialing body for more information.

Q: What happens when my application expires?
A: When a candidate's application expires, any unused exam registrations will expire and the candidate will be marked as ineligible to apply for another exam for 90 days. LEED AP candidates who tested on a composite exam and failed one or both sections will need to retake both sections in their next application period in order to earn the LEED AP credential.

Q: What happens if I pass only one part of a combined exam and my application period expires?
A. When your application expires, all previous exam attempts expire. You will need to re-apply and pass both sections in your next application period in order to earn the LEED AP credential.

Q: Why do I have to wait 90 days past the expiration of my application period before I can retest?
A. The 90 day period is intended to protect the exam content and prevent overexposure due to frequent retesting.
