BEIJING, China (Feb. 9, 2021) – Today, the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) announced China ranks first in the world on its annual list of Top 10 Countries and Territories for LEED in 2021. The ranking highlights countries and regions outside the United States that are making significant strides in healthy, sustainable building design, construction and operations. The country took the top spot for certifying the most LEED projects in 2021, with 1,077 certified projects representing more than 14 million gross square meters (GSM) of certified LEED space.

“China continues to be a global leader for LEED green building due in large part to the dedication of green professionals and project teams who are helping to transform our communities into healthier, more sustainable places for us all,” said Andy To, managing director, GBCI China and Northeast Asia. “We are at a critical point in our fight to address the climate crisis and LEED certified buildings are a critical part of the solution. LEED is designed to support our health and our planet, and as we look ahead and work toward our own climate goals, we must accelerate our green building efforts and reinforce the use of LEED as a tool to help us in that journey.”

LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is the most widely used green building rating system in the world. Available for virtually all building types, LEED provides a framework for healthy, highly efficient, and cost-saving green buildings. LEED certification is a globally recognized symbol of sustainability achievement and leadership.

Canada, India, Republic of Korea and Spain rounded out the top five countries on the list, respectively. These countries represent the ever-growing international demand for certified LEED green buildings that help reduce emissions and support health and well-being. In China, LEED is administered by Green Business Certification Inc. (GBCI China), the premier organization independently recognizing excellence in green business industry performance and practice globally.

The analysis used to develop the list ranks countries and territories in terms of cumulative LEED-certified GSM space as of December 31, 2021. The United States is not included in the list but remains the world’s largest market for LEED with more than 26 million GSM certified space in 2021. The full ranking is as follows:
